Remembrance

As Memorial Day approaches, it is a good time to remember all the immigrant Irish who came to the US and gave the full measure to gain citizenship. Remarkably, comparatively there are more immigrant Medal of Honor recipients from Ireland than any other single country. Great article from IrishCentral

Weekend update

Wishing everyone a safe and reflective Memorial Day as we remember those who have fallen for freedom all over the world. 

 

Grace O’Malley Pirate Gala JUNE 11, 7 pm

The pirate galley at the Oasis Cafe and Bar is taking on stores for the First Annual Grace O’Malley Pirate Gala. Come as you are, pirate or no, but if ye be in your krewe gear, special treats are in store. 

 

Captain Kelly is offering a specially priced pirate feast for 20 dollars that includes a grog, Cornish ala Cutlass, Squashbuckling Vegetables and Planks, pirate booty and more. Tickets are limited.

 

Tickets are available by advanced purchase only. Drop by the pub, or give them a call at (757) 351-6672 to order your tickets. A children’s feast is also available for around 8 dollars, inquire with Kelly.

 

The party starts around 7ish, but continues, with dinner service at 745.  For those pirates who prefer an alternate meal or are satisfied with a night of grog taking, Kelly is offering a limited menu and regular bar service.

If you are bringing a wee nipper with ye, ask about arranging for a child’s meal.

A limited menu and regular bar service will be available that night also.

Weekend and beyond

​Well folks, I have been remiss and have been told about it!!!!
 
Dermot and Randy Dedrickson and I will be travelling to Richmond this Sunday to meet up with the folks in the Richmond Irish American Society to complete plans for the new Irish Heritage area at the WSF in October.
 
Our web designer Una Toibin and her husband celebrated their 10th anniversary last weekend and the Hobans are celebrating theirs this week. Val and Lina had a grand party for their wee one after the Breakfast at Murphy’s for St Brendan’s day.  The DeCarlos and Murla’s are celebrating graduations. Joyce and Al added a new daughter in law to their family last weekend. 
 
So you can see why the folks in Irish in Virginia have been hard to pin down for information.
 
Our own Grace O’Malley (aka Cindy Kays) will grace us (get it…. grace us….see?, oh never mind) with an appearance at the piratey pirates den at the Oasis Cafe and Bar on JUNE 11. More details to come, but Captain Kelly and swabbie John are planning food and grog fit for any hungry pirate!!!! This is the June gathering, so dust off your parrots and swords and come out for a night swashbuckling fun!!!!  Watch the IIV website starting on Sunday for clues to find the treasures.
 
 
We will be selling raffle tickets for the trip to Ireland that weekend too.

Mo and O’Malleys is the place to be this weekend if you are looking for the musical stylings and raucous humor of our own Martin Marron.
 
Don Bunch is on at Murphy’s this weekend, Jesse Chong is on the first part of the week and Val rounds out the rest of the week.  (May 29th the Newport News Pipes and Drums and Murphy’s are sponsoring a fundraiser for the  Sentara Helicopter Service (See Murphy’s site or the NNPP&D site for details)
 
 
Open mic and local bands are playing at the Green Oak. Graham is holding a special concert May 30 at the pub. Tickets are 20 dollars. More details to follow. Scottish music enthusiasts should save the date. This event supports the Williamsburg Scottish Festival.
 
Check the H20 Beach bar site for this week’s Irish offering on Tuesday night, great beer and food prices.
 
Conklin’s Irish Rover has a great new Happy Hour from 4-7 m-F and new menu items in the restaurant. They are opening for all the world cup games and have started their summer hours.

HI folks!  We had a nice breakfast at Murphy’s on Sunday in honor of our St Brendan. Val is on at Murphy’s, Martin is on at Mo and O’Malleys, and the session players are at the Oasis.

Several of our members reported that Riverdance was a great time last week.

Flights to Ireland are being impacted by the volocano, so if you are planning on a trip, be sure to check with your airline for restrictions or alternative routes. 

Our June Gathering is being discussed tonight. Dates and themes to be announced.

Weekend update

Experience the Irish/English peace process first hand tonight at Jack Quinn’s as James West entertains a boat load or two of English Sailors!

Andy O’Driscoll, who just finished filming for an upcoming DVD, is on tonight at Conklins Irish Rover.

Val Little is appearing at the Oasis Cafe and Bar with guest appearances by local Irish singers.

Weekly update:

H20 is hosting a multicourse pirate dinner on Tuesday, so if you are planning to go out for Irish night, give them a call for the open hours. Cindy Kays (otherwise known as Grace O’Malley) will be entertaining the pirates later in the evening.

Conklin’s Irish Rover has started summer hours, opening at 4 pm for a fabulous happy hour for beach goers, great dinner menu, and late night goodies throughout the summer.
They will open for all the world cup games, so don’t despair, just go and cheer.

The Wednesday night session iat the Oasis is always a great way to chill out midweek and it is always a surprise!

Val Little is performing this week at Mo and O’Malleys, call for specific hours and nights.

The Green Oak has an open session on Thursdays and music throughout the weekend.

James West is listed for the week at Murphy’s.

Leighas is at the Borjos Coffee house on the 6th.
